Barrasso, Lummis Demand Spending Cuts in Debt Ceiling Negotiations

May 9, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators John Barrasso and Cynthia Lummis (both R-WY) joined U.S. Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) and 40 of their Republican Senate colleagues in sending a letter to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) explaining that any deal to raise the debt ceiling must include measures to rein in out-of-control spending. Barrasso and Lummis are committed to meaningful fiscal reforms that will alleviate the financial burden on future generations in Wyoming.

“Our economy is in free fall due to unsustainable fiscal policies. This trajectory must be addressed with fiscal reforms. Moreover, recent Treasury projections have reinforced the urgency of addressing the debt ceiling. The House has taken a responsible first step in coming to the table with their proposals. It is imperative that the president now do the same,” said the Senators.
