Lummis Bill to Support Fallen Service Members Signed into Law

October 18, 2022

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Legislation U.S. Senator Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) cosponsored to increase military service members’ life insurance benefit coverage was signed into law this week. The Supporting Families of the Fallen Act increases the U.S. Department of Veterans’ Affairs Service members’ Group Life Insurance (SGLI) and Veterans’ Group Life Insurance (VGLI) coverage amount from $400,000 to $500,000. Until today, SGLI and VGLI coverage amounts had not been updated since 2005.

“This is the first time in 15 years that veterans’ life insurance benefits have been raised to account for inflation,” said Senator Lummis. “I am incredibly grateful for the work the men and women who serve our nation do each and every day. This bill not only helps us truly honor those who pay the ultimate sacrifice to defend our freedom, but it gives peace of mind to both military and veteran families here in Wyoming and all around the country.”

Numerous groups have praised The Supporting Families of the Fallen Act, including the Military Officers Association of America and the Wounded Warrior Project.
