Washington, D.C.— Senate Western Caucus Chair Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) released the following statement praising the Trump administration’s commitment to unleashing American energy by directing the Department of Interior to make more than $119 million available in fiscal year 2025 to revitalize abandoned coal mines.
“I am thrilled that President Trump continues to deliver on his promise to support Wyoming’s energy communities and the hardworking men and women who have powered America for generations,” said Lummis. “This multi-million-dollar investment underscores the president’s commitment to promoting American energy dominance while responsibly reclaiming and repurposing these lands for future economic opportunities. These resources will transform former mining sites into new possibilities for growth and development across Wyoming and the west.”
These grants, authorized under the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 and distributed by the Office of Surface Mining and Reclamation and Enforcement, improve public safety, support local economies, and help coalfield communities repurpose former mines.
The 2025 funding cycle will distribute grants to 24 states with coal production history along with two tribal organizations. After applying the required 5.7% sequestration reduction, the total distribution amounts to $112.9 million.
These direct allocations to state and tribal restoration programs demonstrate the Trump administration’s ongoing support for communities that historically drove America’s industrial development. Local governments and tribal authorities create their own project plans and manage execution, allowing for customized approaches that address specific regional requirements.
