Lummis, Lee and Vance Demand Answers from Google Over Woke Gemini AI

June 3, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senators Cynthia Lummis (R-WY), Mike Lee (R-UT) and JD Vance (R-OH) sent a letter to Google LLC Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai detailing several concerning examples of the Gemini artificial intelligence model (Gemini) creating outputs that intentionally disregard publicly available information and historical facts to align with woke ideology. The senators laid out a series of questions and requested transparency from Google over how Gemini was developed, how it is currently being utilized and what is being done to prevent political bias from tainting this emerging technology.

“Between climate alarmism, wokeism and draconian COVID lockdowns, we have seen coastal elites try and weaponize information and technology to destroy the Wyoming way of life,” said Lummis. “Artificial intelligence is a transformative technology with incredibly positive potential for our country, but I am gravely concerned Google’s Gemini is being cultivated to tilt the political scales and rewrite history. It is imperative that Gemini, and other powerful systems like it, are developed as tools for human advancement and not for ideological influence and control.”

“The use of major search engines and AI to manipulate public opinion or spread blatantly inaccurate historical information for political purposes is deeply concerning,” said Lee. “I am very interested in whether Google’s leadership will publicly disavow these practices and reassure the American people of their transparency.”

Background:

After Gemini was rolled out by Google in February 2024, outputs generated by the artificial intelligence platform raised serious concerns.

  • Gemini refused to say whether Elon Musk tweeting memes or Adolf Hitler ordering the extermination of millions was worse, asserting that it could not decide who “had a more negative impact on society” according to a tweet shared by Nate Silver.
  • When asked to create images of America’s Founding Fathers, the Pope, vikings and other historical figures, Gemini exclusively produced images that were ‘diverse’ instead of historically accurate.
    • The images produced included a woman pope, black Vikings and a range of ‘diverse’ founding fathers, all historically incorrect.
  • Following the horrific October 7, 2023, attacks by Hamas that resulted in more than 1,000 civilian deaths, Gemini, unlike its competitors, refused to answer if Hamas was a designated terror group.

There are also reports of publishers being paid to publish multiple articles per day using Gemini despite the number of documented inaccuracies in Gemini’s work.
